International Workshop: Religious Plurality

On the one hand, Austria is characterised by a high degree of religious diversity. On the other hand, the tragic events in the wake of 7 October 2023 have once again shown how complex and sometimes conflict-laden or fragile this situation is. The workshop responds to this situation and aims to provide input for professional debates on the topic of religious diversity.

Religious diversity has many consequences for life in Austria - in the public sphere, at work and/or in the private sphere. The interdisciplinary and international workshop aims to provide input for professional debates on the topic of religious diversity. During the workshop, participants will work collegially on a contemporary diagnosis of religious diversity. The focus will be on the following questions:

  • What characterises religious diversity in Vienna and Austria?
  • How can it be conceptualised in a practical way?
  • What are the special features of the local situation in international comparison?
  • What does this mean for professional action?

To answer these questions, the workshop will take a time-diagnostic approach. In German-speaking countries in particular, a differentiated debate on the diagnosis of time has developed in recent decades. Its protagonists emphasise the dynamics of the social field in different socio-cultural contexts and oppose paradigmatic statements. They use concrete case studies to conceptualise central aspects of contemporary culture. Current theoretical debates will be used as initial heuristics. On the other hand, the workshop pursues a decidedly comparative agenda. In addition to speakers from Austria, researchers from Switzerland and South Africa (as a minimum and maximum contrast) have been invited. Both are reflected in the structure of the workshop.

The workshop is organised and conducted by Prof. Dr. Karsten Lehmann. It will take place on September, 13th and 14th in the conference hall of the Roman Catholic Deanery of the University of Vienna. The conference language is English. The workshop is funded by RaT, the City of Vienna and the KPH Vienna/Krems. All interested parties are cordially invited.
